Trailing-Point Knives: Precision Slicing & Field Processing
The trailing-point blade is defined by its upward-sweeping spine, which creates an elongated cutting belly relative to the knife's overall footprint. That geometry is optimized for long, continuous draw cuts rather than piercing or chopping, making it the natural choice for processing tasks where a sweeping slice through meat, fish, or tissue is more effective than a push cut. The elevated tip also keeps the hand clear of the cutting plane during flat-surface processing, reducing fatigue and improving control over extended sessions.
Built for the Hunt and the Water
Benchmade deploys trailing-point geometry across two of its most demanding processing collections. In the hunting lineup, the Meatcrafter® is the trailing-point at its most refined: purpose-built for deboning, trimming, and processing wild game from field to table. S45VN steel delivers the edge retention needed through extended processing sessions, while G10 and Santoprene® handle options maintain secure grip when hands are wet or bloody. In the Water Collection, the Fishcrafter™ applies the same geometry to dedicated fillet- and boning-knife work, with a flexible CPM® 154 blade and a trailing-point profile that follows fish contours with precision.
What Sets a Benchmade Trailing-Point Apart
Every trailing point in the lineup is sharpened with Benchmade's proprietary SelectEdge® process, engineered specifically for the draw-cut demands of this geometry and significantly more efficient than the standard bevels found on most processing knives. Blade flex is precision-ground at the Oregon City facility to match each knife's intended use. Material selection follows the same logic, with steel and handle choices tailored to the specific environment each knife is built for.
Because Bencmade's trailing-point knives are over 6 inches long and sharpened to an ultra-fine edge, LifeSharp restores the full SelectEdge® geometry to factory standards whenever needed, for life. That's backed by a lifetime warranty that covers the knife for as long as you own it.
