Survival and Bushcraft Knives

Survival & Bushcraft Knives: The Tools Serious Outdoorsmen Trust

A survival or bushcraft knife faces a different kind of test than most. Batoning through hardwood, preparing feather sticks for fire starting, carving a shelter peg, processing food in the wild...these are tasks that demand a blade with genuine toughness, a handle that holds securely when hands are wet or cold, and a construction that doesn't give up under hard use. Full-tang fixed blades deliver maximum strength for the heaviest tasks. Purpose-built folding knives offer packability and one-handed deployment when conditions demand it. How you carry, where you go, and what you expect it to do determine the right knife for the adventure.

Built for the Field

A purpose-built survival or bushcraft knife has a few non-negotiables. A thick spine, typically 4-5mm or more, handles batoning and heavy chopping without flexing. A proper grind delivers the optimal geometry for carving and feather sticking. A full-tang construction ensures there is no weak point under hard use. Handle ergonomics need to maintain grip security through extended sessions and in wet or cold conditions. And a sheath that carries securely and gives fast access can be as important as the knife itself.

Preparedness looks different for everyone, and so does the knife that gets you there. The Bushcrafter is the dedicated bushcraft fixed blade in the lineup, purpose-built for feather sticking, batoning, shelter building, and food prep, with a ferro-rod striking choil in the heel of the blade and a leather sheath that includes a ferro rod attachment. The Saddle Mountain Skinner brings fixed blade reliability to game processing in the field, with a blade profile and jimping refined through real in-field feedback. The PSK™ is a personal survival tool in a single packable folder, with AXIS® Assist deployment, a ferro rod striking choil, and a MagnaCut® blade for those who prefer a capable carry without the bulk of a fixed blade. The 940BK-03 Osborne rounds out the collection as a versatile outdoor folder with a MagnaCut® reverse tanto blade built for backcountry and overland carry alike.

What Sets a Benchmade Survival Knife Apart

Benchmade designs and builds its survival and bushcraft knives in Oregon City, Oregon, USA, drawing on decades of field experience and continuous input from serious outdoorsmen who put these tools through real conditions in demanding environments. Every design decision, from blade geometry to handle material selection, is driven by what performs under pressure, not what looks good on a shelf. Construction is overbuilt for failure-proofing, because a survival knife that gives up in the field is not a survival knife. Handle materials like G10, Grivory®, and carbon fiber are chosen specifically for characteristics like durability, weight savings, and grip in wet, cold, and demanding conditions. Steel selection prioritizes toughness and corrosion resistance, with MagnaCut® delivering the kind of field durability that extended backcountry use demands.
